Penang Eat: Super Star Koay Teow Soup (天皇卤味 / 天皇粿条汤) @ Kimberley Street

Super Star Koay Teow Soup (天皇卤味 / 天皇粿条汤), established in 1960, is a road-side stall that appears along Kimberly Street Night Market, outside a dessert shop called Dessert Old Time Delight Shop (汕头街养生糖水铺), at around 5pm in the evening. The push-cart stall is popular for its kway teow soup and charcoal-braised delights, and draws a long queue every night. The stall is accoladed in the Malaysia Michelin Guide for 2025 — few months after my last visit.

Super Star has 3 variants of koay teow soup with either clear soup. black soup or dry-tossed with sauce. There are also noodle dishes combined with braised delights, such as braised chicken (whole leg) noodle, braised chicken feet noodle, braised pork noodle, etc. Any of the braised chicken / pork parts can also be ordered as standalone dishes.

The Black Soup Koay Teow (黑汤粿条), added with black braised sauce, is served with lean pork slices, pig liver, fishballs, on thin-flat kway teow / hor fun and garnished with spring onion and fried shallots. The braised sauce, used to braise both chicken and pork, induces its savoury flavours on the noodle dish, making it a flavourful dish.

The well-marinated Braised Chicken Whole Leg (卤鸡全脚) is meaty with smooth skin and very tender meat. It has nice flavours from the spiced soy marinade, not salty. It is so good. The Braised Egg is well-braised without a greyish layer on the egg yolk.

I did not try Super Star Koay Teow Soup's chicken feet, which is praised by Michelin Guide, on the first visit. I will make sure not to miss it the next time I am in Penang.

Super Star Koay Teow Soup has also opened a new shop, not far from the stall, to serve its popular dishes during the day.
