The Royal Coconut (太子椰) is a dessert chain in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, that serves all sorts of cold dessert using coconuts. The main outlet along Jalan Pantai, near to Gaya Street, is the most convenient outlet due to its proximity to the tourist-popular street.
Naturally, the shop will have lots of fresh coconuts above anything else. The coconuts used are the green pandan coconuts (香椰) of Malaysia which have slight fragrance similar to pandan leaf.
Apart from coconut pudding, which is a popular Sabah dessert, there are coconut shakes, coconut juice in either freshly-cut coconuts or in cups and coconut ice-cream too.
The shop has an air-conditioned room for dining-in, which is very welcoming on hot days.
The pandan coconut pudding (香椰布丁) is not just coconut filled with coconut-flavoured pudding but added with some chewy white jelly and flavoured red round jelly that enhanced the flavour and texture of the dessert.
The thin-layer of soft flesh of the pandan coconut can also be eaten with the pudding.
The Royal Coconut’s coconut pudding is definitely a must-try when in Kota Kinabalu and even more so when the weather is hot or to kill time in the evening.
