Hong Kee Claypot Chicken Rice (鴻记瓦煲鸡饭) and Portuguese Grilled Fish (裕记特色葡萄牙烤鱼) operate as one restaurant along the popular food street of Jalan Sultan in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown. On first look, they seemed to be mobile stall vendors in a night market, but they do have a shop behind the stalls offering more seats and better ventilation. Beverages are available too.
Hong Kee's claypots of chicken rice are cooked over charcoal fire at one of the stalls right outside the shop with better ventilation for the hot stoves.
The other stall beside Hong Kee grilled fishes and seafood wrapped in aluminium foils over hot charcoal. The Portuguese grilling style does not place the wrapped seafood over fire but over hot embers instead. This allows the meat to be cooked thoroughly without being too dry and without burnt skin.
The signature claypot chicken rice and grilled fish, or other seafood, can be ordered separately or as a set to go for both specialties. Other cooked dishes, such as vegetables and soup, are also available.
The small-size claypot chicken rice is served with tender chicken meat, slices of Chinese sausage, salted fish and topped with fragrant oil, dark soy sauce and a raw egg (optional). Apart from adding a nice eggy flavour to the dish, the raw egg also coats and smoothen the rice without having to add too much oil.
The claypot rice was superbly cooked without a single rice sticking to the bottom of the claypot — some diners may like that charred layer of hard burnt rice but not me.
The claypot chicken rice is delicious. And the portion of a small-size order is quite a lot for one person.
