Kluang Eat: Yean Kee Beef Noodle (元记牛肉濑粉) @ Taman Mumi

Kedai Makan Yean Kee (元记牛肉濑粉) serves their traditional beef noodles in a spot outside the town centre of Kluang, but not far away from Kluang Mall. Although it is just 2Km from Kluang Bus Terminal, it will be easier for travellers to get there using Grab since there are no pedestrian walkways along the roads in that area.

For over 70 years, Yean Kee has been making its own lai fun (濑粉) from rice. The white rice noodle is also known as Hailam noodle (海南粉), which is the same noodle used in Penang's famous asam laksa.

Apart from rice noodle, beef is also Yean Kee's specialty. Its signature beef noodle comprises of a mix of beef, tripes, tendons and sliced meat with home-made lai fun noodle. Although both dry and soup versions are available, the dry version is highly recommended. A cheaper version of the noodle with beef and tripe only is also availabe. Other than beef noodles, there are beef-ball noodle, fishball noodle and rendang beef lai fun / rice, which is another of their signature dishes.

Yean Kee's dry beef noodle looks appetising and delicious from first glance. Their specially-concocted dark sauce is covered by the thick, white lai fun, added with tender beef, tripes, tendons and sliced meat and topped with peanuts, pickled vegetable, spring onions, sesame seeds and half a lime. Before eating, squeeze some lime juice into the dish and mix the content evenly with the savoury-sweet dark sauce. It is really delicious.

The cheaper version of the beef noodle is similarly delicious, just without the tendons and sliced meat.

Another specialty dish of Yean Kee is their claypot bovine offal soup (砂煲牛杂汤). However, advance order of at least a day is required.

Yean Kee's rendang beef dishes are the next thing to try.
