Kulai Cafe: Cafe Jufei (聚啡馆) Toasted Garlic Bread

On the ground floor of an old building situated along Jalan Ismail in Kulai District to the north of Johor Bahru, a doorway, besides Yun Yun Loy (远远来) Wantan Noodle shop, leads to a "hidden" cafe up on a flight of steps.

A chalkboard outside the doorway carries several pieces of information, especially the types of specialty coffee bean for V60 hand-drip coffee (手冲咖啡) for the day. On my visit, Tanzania, Brazil and Mexico coffee beans were available. Tanzania beans is one of my favourites, so I will try the tastes of the other beans.

Through the doorway, and up two flights of steps to the 3rd floor, is the real entrance to the cafe. All shoes are to be left outside the cafe.

Stepping into the cafe is like travelling back in time to a world without modern hassles — a slow and relaxing world in Cafe Jufei (聚啡馆). "聚啡" can be interpreted as "get together with coffee".

Cafe Jufei has a homely and very retro settings — like travelling in a time tunnel. Most of the collections, figurines, comic books, vintage equipment, cassette tapes, etc, are several decades old. Some of the items brought back my childhood memories.

For Star Wars fans, check out the large number of Star Wars figurines on the shelf.

Cafe Jufei's menu is very simple. Apart from beverages, such as coffee (both western and hand-drip), floral tea and chocolate, two light-bite items are also available: homemade bread and cheesecakes (different flavours may be available).

I tried the V60 hand-drip using Mexico beans on the first visit and the Brazil beans two days later — I prefer hand-brew coffees these days.

Borrowed a vintage toy from the shelf to take photo with a glass of mocha latte.

Cafe Jufei's homemade bread looks very appetising with white and black sesame seeds. It is spread with garlic butter and toasted with at least two types of cheese. The taste is splendid. It is a must-try when relaxing here.

Out of 3 choices of cheesecake of the day, I opted for the apple cheesecake, which I have never tried before. It is cheesy with citrusy apple taste and slight cinnamon flavour. Nice!

Cafe Jufei is a nice place to visit and spend some time relaxing here when exploring Kulai District.
