Pontian Eat: Pontian Coffee 9 (笨珍亚九咖啡) Kopitiam @ Pontian Kechil

In the 1950s, Ah Kow (亚九) self-picked coffee beans, roasted and ground his Nanyang-style coffee into powder and peddled them on his bicycle along the streets of Pontian. After more than 60 years, and three generations, of hard work, Ah Kow's coffee, or Kopi Kow (亚九咖啡), became reputable in Pontian. Today, Pontian Coffee 9 kopitiams are sprouting up in both Pontian and Johor Bahru.
The main outlet of Pontian Coffee 9 is located in Kampung Atap, next to Pontian Kechil in Pontian District.
The kopitiam serves a wide range of traditional coffee, including its signature Nanyang black coffee, using Malaysia's coffee beans and also imported beans. For food, there are various traditional toasts, nasi lemak, mee siam, herbal chicken / curry chicken / rendang chicken / spiced fried chicken with rice, etc.
Coffee 9's Signature Nanyang Black Coffee (招牌南洋焦糖黑咖啡) is a frothy cup of milk coffee — "black coffee" means the coffee beans are roasted with caramelised sugar, the non-milk option is called "black coffee-O". The coffee has nice aroma and well-balanced flavours, not too milky and not too sweet. It is seriously a great cup of coffee.
The butter-kaya toasts are charcoal-grilled till mostly crispy yet still retained some softness in the bread. Spread with thin layer of kaya and slices of savoury butter, the toasts have more savoury flavours and mild-sweet. I like this toasts.
The Herbal Chicken with White Rice (药材鸡+白饭) is served with a chicken drumstick in herbal soup and a fried egg with runny yolk on white rice. The herbal soup is prepared using several herbs, including angelica, tang sheng, wolf berries, red dates, dried longan, etc, and has a nice aroma, delicious flavour, mild-sweet and non-bitter.
The chicken drumstick may seem small when standing in the soup but it is quite meaty and very tender. This is definitely must-try.
Aside from sipping traditional kopi with food, Coffee 9's Nanyang black coffee powder are available for buying home. There are Nanyang white coffee (without caramelised sugar) and Premium Liberica coffee powder too.
The off-the-shelf Nanyang black coffee / Nanyang white coffee / Pemium Liberica coffee are available in bags of 15 sachets each or powder form. Several premium coffee beans, such as Vietnam's Liberica, local Liberica, imported coffee beans, are available in drip coffee sachets.
When in Pontian, visit the main outlet of Pontian Coffee 9 to have coffee. Otherwise, visit the kopitiam's branch outlets in Taman Mount Austin and Setia Tropika in Johor Bahru.
