Hock Kee Kopitiam (福气安康), started in 1980, is a Nanyang Kopitiam chain with numerous outlets in Malaysia, mainly in Johor Bahru, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, serving Nanyang dishes with traditional coffee. It opened a branch in JB City Square Shopping Centre in March 2024. Other outlets are in Taman Molek, Toppen Mall, Taman Sutera Utama and Eco Botanic in Johor Bahru.

Although located inside a shopping mall, Hock Kee Kopitiam serves breakfast as early as 8am — there are special arrangements for breakfasters to enter JB City Square from 8am to 10am. Hock Kee's breakfast set menu, at special prices, is available only for the breakfast session and last order is at 9:45am.
Available for breakfast only, the Hock Kee Roti Prata with Curry Chicken (福气煎饼加咖喱鸡腿) + 2 half-boiled eggs set comes with a choice of beverage. The flaky roti prata is accompanied by a curry gravy that is mild spicy and the chicken drumstick is very tender. Hock Kee's traditional kopi-O is aromatic, thick and not bitter. This is great for breakfast.

Other than set meals, mix-matching toasts, egg tarts and buns with traditional coffee is another way to enjoy breakfast at Hock Kee Kopitiam and going for more of their specialties.
Top-left: The Sambal Egg Cucumber Toast (鸡蛋叁巴香烤面包) has nasi lemak ingredients sandwiched between toasts that are grilled till crispy. It tastes like nasi lemak with toasty aroma.
Top-right: Hor Ka Sai (虎咬狮), another signature kopi of Hock Kee, is traditional kopi added with Milo (chocolate-malt powder) and has a nice aroma and flavour.
Bottom-left: A Matcha Egg Tart (日系抹茶蛋挞) and a Curry Potato Egg Tart (咖喱马铃薯蛋挞) — more on them below.
Bottom-right: The Matcha Polo Bun (抹茶手工菠萝包), spread with kaya and coffee-butter, has thin crispy crust enclosing the matcha-flavoured bun. It has a nice matcha aroma and the coffee-butter has a wonderful flavour.

Outside of breakfast time, Hock Kee has a thick menu with a wide range of dishes, including Malaysian local delights, Nanyang dishes, vegetarian, traditional pastries, desserts, etc, and western dishes too. When spoilt for choice, flip to the "Top Picks" page and pick one of their best-sellers. Hock Kee has also partnered with Kwan Kee Store to serve their Hong Kong-style traditional kuih / snacks.

Hock Kee has 4 flavours of thick egg tart with flaky crusts to go for. The Matcha Egg Tart (日系抹茶蛋挞) has a nice matcha flavour in the custard and mild-sweet. The Sea Salt Egg Tart (海盐蛋挞) has a muffin-like layer on top of the egg custard and the crust is crispier due to its more saline content and is savoury-sweet. The beautiful Signature Sunshine Egg Tart (福气太阳蛋挞) is creamy and mild-sweet too. The Curry Potato Egg Tart (咖喱马铃薯蛋挞) is laced with spices and has nice curry flavours almost like eating a curry puff but with different textures. These egg tarts tastes nice and very special.

Hock Kee's Satay Fried Kuey Teow (特色沙爹炒粿条), one of the top picks, is stir-fried with satay sauce and its ingredients, including two big prawns, eggs, shreds of chicken, fishcake slices, beansprouts, and garnished with spring onions and fried shallots. An additional scoop of satay sauce accompanies the fried noodle for enhancing its flavour further as desired. It is a nice, tasty dish with new taste experience.

The Shanghai Grilled Chicken Chop with Fried Rice (上海鸡扒留香炒饭) is a bowl of egg fried rice topped with grilled chicken, sweet corn kernels, sio pak choy (小白菜) and dribbled with a savoury sauce. Stir-mix the contents thoroughly with the sauce before eating. The chicken chop is tender and tasty and the fried rice has nice flavour. This is the first dish I tried in Hock Kee and it has captivated me since.

The Honey BBQ Chicken Wonton Noodle (蜜汁鸡肉云吞面), with red sauce, uses chicken meat that is grilled with char siew sauce and very tender. The thin egg noodle is tossed in a special red sauce that is made using char siew sauce, tomato, pepper, etc. Aside from wantons in a bowl of savoury soup, there are fried wantons and pak choy too. This dish is flavourful, sweet-savoury and delicious!

Top-left: The Laksa Pumpkin Mee Hoon Kuih (叻沙金瓜面粉粿) uses pumpkin-flavoured hand-torn dough cooked in a rich sweet-savoury-spicy laksa broth with fishballs, fishcake slices, shiitake mushrooms, tofu puffs, etc, and topped with fried anchovies, fried shallots and spring onions. It is accompanied by a special dipping sauce made with minced green chillies and fish sauce — and it tastes sweet. A unique mee hoon kueh dish that is tasty.
Top-right: The Signature Lontong with Chicken Meat (福气招牌隆冬+特制香料鸡块) is a rice dish using lontong (rice wrapped in banana leaves and steamed) in a light curry broth with tofu puffs, egg, fishcake, cabbage, long beans, carrot slices and added with chunky fried chicken meat. The chicken meat is spiced and the curry broth is creamy, flavourful and mild spicy. This is also a nice dish to go for, especially for breakfast.
Botton-left: The Soto Ayam with Nasi Impit (马来米糕鸡汤) is served with lontong (a.k.a. nasi impit), shredded chicken, beansprouts, hard-boiled egg and peanuts in milk-spicy chicken soup. A fried potato patty is served separately with a dark spicy sauce. The lontong soaked up the flavourful soup and is as tasty as the soup.
Bottom-right: The Nasi Lemak Banjir (福气招牌椰浆饭) is a nasi lemak dish that is served with calamari in spicy sambal sauce and chicken drumstick in sweet-savoury curry sauce — more curry sauce is in a pourer for spicing up the dish as desired. This is one dish with many flavours to satisfy the palates.

Other than serving food, Hock Kee's traditional kopi (original), white coffee, milk tea, hor ga sai (虎咬狮 or traditional kopi with chocolate powder), milk tea, pineapple tarts, various styles of instant noodles and homemade condiments are available for sales to take home or as gifts. Hock Kee's egg tarts and polo buns are available as take-aways too.
Hock Kee has also setup a stall near the exit to JB Sentral to sell its special-flavour egg tarts and polo buns as take-aways.

Hock Kee Kopitiam's wide range of Nanyang dishes and homemade products will definitely be able to satisfy everyone's palates. Visit the kopitiam, try the dishes and find something you will like.
