JB Eat: Kang Bee Hong (慷美峰) Chicken Rice @ Taman Sentosa

Kang Bee Hong (慷美峰), since 1993, is a Nanyang Kopitiam chain with about 9 outlets in Johor Bahru, including the new one in Taman Sentosa, next to Plaza Sentosa. The kopitiam-chain serves their signature roasted delights, especially roasted chicken, among a long list of Nanyang cuisines.

Kang Bee Hong's new outlet at Taman Sentosa has a cosy and clean environment. Go early for lunch or on a weekday and you will see rows of whole steamed chickens and roasted chickens hanging behind a glass enclosure. There are free cookies (old-school biscuits) for diners — self-service.

Kang Bee Hong uses their traditional charcoal-grilled method to roast chicken, duck and pork, turning the meats into delicious roasted delicacies.

The roasted delights and Hainanese steamed chicken are served with chicken rice as signature dishes. As expected of a Nanyang Kopitiam, there are traditional coffee, toasts, traditional pastries, wanton noodle, curry mee (or rice) with roasted delights, Nanyang cooked dishes, traditional desserts, etc.

The Roasted Chicken & Honey Char Siew Rice (烧鸡叉烧饭) is a good way for solo diner to go for 2 types of roasted meat with rice — for big eaters, there is another option for 3 types of roasted meat. The rice has fragrant aroma and flavour of chicken stock.

The roasted chicken is nicely-roasted, tender and not dry. The lean honey char siew (barbecue pork, 蜜汁叉烧) is also well-roasted till very tender and juicy and coated in thick sweet sauce. They are delicious. The meats are accompanied by Chinese pickled mustard as side dish.

The Curry Noodle with 3 Mix Roasted Meat (福气三拼咖喱面), from the Roasted Meat Curry Noodle Series (烧腊咖喱面系列), offers an option to pick a desired noodle type and a choice of 3 out of 7 types of meat.

I picked steamed chicken, roasted herbal duck (当归烤鸭) and honey char siew (lean) for my curry hor fun. The non-spicy curry soup contains other ingredients such as tofu puffs, pork rinds, cockles, bean sprouts, etc. A separate dish of sambal chilli is for enhancing the spiciness of the dish — if desired. The curry has a nice flavour and all the meats are tender. A special note here is that the honey char siew literally melts in the mouth. Delicious.

Other than delicious dishes, Kang Bee Hong has some special beverages that are nice to try too. Their Ice Frozen Milk Tea (冰镇冻奶茶) is one of the Top 10 picks.

The Japanese Iced Plum Green Tea (日本话梅绿茶冰) with slices of lime is a nice drink with multiple flavours. The subtle flavour of green tea with sweet-saltiness of the plum and refreshing citrusy of lime juice give this drink a rather unique taste. Must-try.

Nyonya Cendol is a traditional iced dessert that is often served with crushed ice and sweetened with gula Melaka. At Kang Bee Hong, the cendol is served as a beverage with ice and much lesser sweetness. It is nice as a dessert-drink and the lower sweetness level is a plus.

Kang Bee Hong also has breakfast value sets from 7:30am to 11:30am and high tea value sets from 3pm to 6pm.
