The name of a traditional pastry shop in the old town of Pekan Muar is simply called Seremban Siew Pow or S'ban Siew Pow (芙蓉烧包). Aptly named, the shop makes and sells the famous siew bao (烧包) of Seremban (芙蓉), in the state of Negeri Sembilan, and other Chinese pastries.

The shop sells several types of freshly-baked traditional pastry with different fillings. Aside from siew bao, there are char siew puffs, egg tarts, wife biscuits, tau sah peah (mung bean biscuits), kaya puff, etc. Other local products, of other brands, are sold here too, including the Muar-specialty mee siput.

Top-left: Some of the shop's popular traditional pastries are chicken siew bao (鸡肉烧包), pork siew bao (猪肉烧包) and char siew puff (叉烧酥). All the pastries have crispy crusts and are not too sweet. Top-right: Pork siew bao has dry lean meat filling and is tender. Bottom-left: Chicken siew bao has white sesame seeds on its crust. The filling is made with dry tender chicken meat with green peas. Bottom-right: Char siew puff has a moist filling with barbecue pork in red char siew sauce and carries the expected mild-sweet note of the sauce.

Seremban Siew Pow carries quite a number of local products of Malaysia. The staff recommended two of their most popular products: mee siput and salted egg cookies.
The Johor-specialty mee siput, or snail cracker, was created in the 1950s in Muar. The old-school snack is handmade using long strips of noodle being deep-fried until crispy — like crackers — and look like snail. The cracker is near tasteless and should be eaten with its accompanying sauce, which is typically sambal chilli. However, the sambal chilli tastes different by different makers. The mee siput from Seremban Siew Pow has a sauce that is sweet-spicy, not too spicy, and enjoyable. It is a must-try when in Muar.

The salted egg cookies (咸蛋酥饼) by Zia Siang Trading (马口饼家), a well-known Negeri Sembilan biscuit maker, is a tasty snack. The cookie has a crumbly texture with a rich salted egg flavour but not too salty.
When visiting the old town of Muar, pick some traditional pastries and local products at Seremban Siew Pow shop. There is no need to go all the way to Seremban for their siew bao, get it in Muar instead.
