Chicken House is the name of the coffee shop in Kilat Court across a road from the new Bukit Timah Interim Hawker Centre. The coffee shop has few stalls within its premise: a kampung chicken rice stall, a mala hotpot stall, a dessert stall and a beverage stall.
The stall that serves kampung chicken rice (甘榜鸡饭) is simply named “Chicken Rice”. The chicken rice stall used to serve both salted chicken and kampung chicken with rice but only kampung chicken rice in the last few years. Other than chicken rice, the stall serves cooked vegetable dishes as well.
The kampung chicken rice, with extra meat for a single pax, is served with delicious-looking chicken with yellowish skin. The meat is smooth, very tender, not much fats and lightly flavoured with light soy sauce and fragrant oil. It is very good.
The thin gelatin layer under the skin is clear and transparent after being chilled. No fats in sight.
Although it is usually preferred to eat steamed chicken meat with ginger-garlic-lime-chilli for additional flavours, the kampung chicken meat eaten on its own is pretty nice. Going for extra meat is the way to satisfy the cravings.
For 2-person dining, can go for 2 sets of chicken rice with normal portion of meat with an extra vegetable dish, such as stir-fired beansprouts, etc. To have more meat, go for half a chicken for 2 pax or a whole chicken for 4 pax — kampung chicken is smaller in size compared to typical chicken.
When craving for chicken rice, go for kampung chicken rice at Chicken House. The tender meat is definitely different from other Hainanese chicken rice.
