Mei Mei Japanese Carrot Cake (妹妹日式萝卜糕) is one of the many food stalls in Bukit Timah Interim Hawker Centre. Its name is attention-grabbing to curious people like me — Japanese-style carrot cake. Aside from Japanese Carrot Cake, first of its kind to be created in Singapore by Mei Mei, the stall serves local-style white / black carrot cake too, oyster omelette and a number of Japanese donburi dishes and a fried udon dish.

The Signature Japanese Carrot Cake (招牌日式萝卜糕) is prepared by frying a big piece of egg omelette and added with white radish cakes without breaking the egg. Once cooked, the omelette is flipped onto a plate such that the radish cakes are underneath it. The dish is then topped with three different sauces — white (mayonnaise?), orange (spicy mayo?) and pink (shrimp sauce?) — bonito flakes and spring onions before serving. It looks tasty. The local carrot cake dish with strong flavours of the Japanese sauces and bonito flakes create a new taste experience. Be warned that the plate can be pretty hot when the food is just served.

The Chicken Teriyaki Don (鸡肉照烧盖饭) — available with salmon too — is served with grilled chicken meat, dribbled with teriyaki sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds, on Japanese short-grain rice and added with pickled radish, kizami nori (roasted shredded seaweeds) and greens. The grilled chicken meat is tender with sweet teriyaki sauce and the pickled daikon radish gives the dish some crunchiness. It is nice.

Mei Mei Japanese Carrot Cake is another great stall that serves both local and Japanese dishes at cheaper prices.
