Family Kedai Kek & Roti, or Family Pastry Shop (芳邻西点蛋糕), is a chain of pastry shops that sells a wide variety of cakes, breads and pastries. It has several outlets in Batu Pahat, Parit Raja and Yong Peng, all within Batu Pahat District. The bakery, known as Family Kerk Bakery, is located in Sri Gading.
I visited the outlet at the intersection between Jalan Rahmat and Jalan Abdul Rahman in Batu Pahat — the nearest outlet to Batu Pahat Express Bus Terminal.
Family Pastry Shop sells a wide range of cakes with different flavours — chocolate, orange, sunflower, marble, coffee, butter, peanut, etc. They have vegetarian cakes as well. Some of the breads and pastries on the shelves look very interesting too.
The most popular cake of Family Pastry Shop is their ogura cake (相思蛋糕). It comes in six flavours: original, pandan, mocha, chocolate, orange and mint.
What's so special about their ogura cake? It has a very fine texture, very spongy and is surprisingly soft — almost like a chiffon cake but much smaller air pockets. The flavours of the cakes are pretty distinctive too. They are very good!
Apart from ogura cakes, other cakes are great to try too. The kopi cake gives off a slight coffee-caramel fragrance, tastes good and not too sweet.
I have also been to Yong Peng on a day trip and bought more of Family's ogura cakes from the shop along Jalan Besar. So far, I have tried the original, pandan and orange flavours and really like them.
