Kwan Kee Store (坤记糕品), well-known for its Hong Kong-style traditional rice-based desserts, has debuted in Kuala Lumpur in late 2023 and has since opened up a number of stores in West Malaysia, including in Johor Bahru. The brand is recognised in Hong Kong Michelin Guide from 2016 to 2021 for its use of traditional, stone-grinding techniques to make its pastries, especially its signature rice bowl cakes and steamed cakes.
In Hong Kong, the only known location of Kwan Kee Store is at booth HS11 along the Avenue of Stars — the original store in Sham Shui Po, since 1965, had closed after its owner retired in 2022 and the brand is carried on by his disciple of 30 years. Kwan Kee Store has maintained its root in Hong Kong with the (known) little booth.
The booth sells Kwan Kee's signature rice bowl cakes, several flavours of steamed cakes as well as popular Hong Kong light snacks, such as satay fish balls, etc, and beverages, including Hong Kong-style hot / iced milk tea.
The Steamed Red Bean Cake has whole red beans with mellow flavour of red bean and mildly sweet. The Steamed Pandan Coconut Milk Cake has mild pandan flavour with rich coconut milk sweetness. The mellow, nice flavours of the desserts with low sweetness levels are expected of Kwan Kee Store's desserts.
When strolling along the Avenue of Stars, the chilled desserts at Kwan Kee Store are welcoming, especially under the hot sun in summer.
