Mersing Eat: Sri Mersing Cafe (丽丰西果饮冰室) @ Mersing Kechil

Sri Mersing Cafe (丽丰西果饮冰室) is a very traditional confectionery cum coffee shop located in an old shophouse in Mersing Kechil. The cafe serves mainly traditional beverages and confectionery items and is a great place for breakfast or afternoon coffee/tea.

For traditional kopi, hot/iced beverages, soft-boiled eggs and roti bakar (toasts), order with the lady. All other items are self-service. Payment to be made after the meal.

The kopi-O kosong has a balanced flavour, not acidic nor bitter. The Roti Bakar (traditional toasts) is grilled till very crispy and spread with lesser sweet kaya but thicker slab of savoury butter. The toasts maybe small in size, so order more as desired or try other confections. The soft-boiled eggs are cooked slightly longer so there are no raw albumen (egg white) and the orange yolk in semi-solid state — from health perspective, this state is better.

For self-service items, there are hot snacks (curry puffs, etc), cakes (fruit cake, marble cake, banana cake, etc), cookies, buns with different fillings (kaya, margarine, coconut, etc), egg tarts, caramelised egg tarts, nasi lemak, fried bee hoon, etc. The items may vary day to day. Their nasi lemak is very popular and runs out fast, usually by morning.

The banana cake and thick egg tart are nice and not very sweet. The fried bee hoon, with half a hard-boiled egg, is nice too with tasty sweet-spicy chilli.

Sri Mersing Cafe is very popular and often fully packed in the morning of weekends, including Friday, and public / school holidays. The ladies managing the cafe are always overwhelmed by the crowd, so be patient or avoid peak hours — when it just opened for the day. Other weekdays or from noon onwards are better times.
