Maxwell Food Centre (麥士威熟食中心) is situated right beside the new Maxwell MRT Station and opposite Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. It has around 100 stalls and is another convenient and popular spot to go for local food in Chinatown. Several of the stalls are recommended by Singapore Michelin Guide since 2017. We continued our Michelin Food Hunt to try them all.
1. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (天天海南鸡饭)
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is famous for its Hainanese chicken rice, which is loved by Anthony Bourdain, an American celebrity chef. Anthony had said that the stall's "chicken rice is so fragrant and delicious that it can be eaten on its own". Occupying two stall units in Maxwell Food Centre, the stall is seldom without its long queue.

Their steamed chicken rice has very tender chicken with ultra-smooth skin and the chicken-stock-flavoured rice is aromatic. The dish is definitely one of the best. Aside from steamed chicken, Tian Tian's roasted chicken is superbly done too with nicely roasted skin and the meat still retain its juiciness. Go for both steamed and roasted chicken, if possible.

2. Rojak‧Popiah & Cockle (啰惹.薄饼.鲜蛤)
Rojak.Popiah & Cockle is a straightforward name — the stall serves rojak (Nanyang fruit salad), popiah (Chinese spring roll) and fresh cockles, among others. The common trait for the three dishes is that no cooking is required after ordering.

The rojak has slices of pineapple, cucumber, fried dough fritters, turnip and beansprouts stir-mixed in shrimp paste sauce and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. The dish has well-balanced flavours. Their popiahs (2 pieces per order) have fresh, crunchy ingredients in thin crepes and are delicious too.

3. Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake (洪家福州蚝饼)
Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake sells only Fuzhou oyster cake (or oyster puff), a traditional snack from Fuzhou, China, that is passed down from generation to generation. Anthony Bourdain had mentioned Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake's oyster puffs in his collection "The Nasty Bits".

The oyster cake, with all its ingredients wrapped in flour batter, is deep-fried until its crust is dark brown and looks crispy even before taking a bite. Crispy crust with crunchy peanuts and fresh hot filling makes the oyster puff a really tasty snack, even after meals.

4. The 1950’s Coffee (五十年代)
The 1950's Coffee is popular for its traditional Nanyang kopi and butter-kaya toasts. Its main outlet is in Chinatown Complex and has a long queue all the time. It has setup a branch in Maxwell Food Centre to serve its traditional kopi with toasts and soft-boiled eggs. Having breakfast with a cup of thick, aromatic kopi / kopi-O is a great way to start the day.

Aside from the list of Singapore Michelin Guide-recommended food stalls above, there are many food stalls in Maxwell Food Centre serving other delicious local delights. For all you know, some of them may be recommended by the Michelin Guide next.
