Tangkak Kopitiam (东甲咖啡店) is a popular spot for locals to have meals and coffee till late into the night. Its main outlet is in Tangkak Town, right opposite Kian Hoon Keng Temple (茧云宫) along Jalan Hospital. The kopitiam has several branches in Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands — which makes the Tangkak outlet the nearest to Singapore.

The kopitiam is quite big and spacious and is equipped with two large televisions that are tuned to the sports channels or local news, whichever available. The restaurant is quieter on weekdays outside of meal times and crowded in the evening and on weekends.

As a kopitam-style restaurant, Tangkak Kopitiam serves a long list of Nanyang dishes, Malaysia delights, traditional toasts, breads, western dishes, etc, and also several Korean, Japanese and Thai dishes. Be warned that the portion of some dishes can be big!

The Siham Kuey Teow (鲜蛤炒粿条) has cockles, prawns, egg and bean sprouts fried with flat rice noodle in savoury sauce. The noodle dish is added with crunchy fresh salad of carrot and cucumber and the lightly-cooked beansprouts are also crunchy. The cockles are lightly-cooked too so they do not taste bloody and cold. The quantity of cockles is a lot such that there is at least a cockle with every mouthful. The noodle dish has varying textures and tasty.

The Fried Xiang Di (香底米粉) is basically a wat dan (滑蛋) dish with fried rice vermicelli. It is served in a huge shallow bowl with fresh crunchy prawns, chicken, fish cake slices, mushrooms, shreds of carrot, greens, etc, drench in a savoury soup with egg drops and garnished with fried shallots and spring onions. The noodle dish is nice tasting and the savoury. The portion of this dish is pretty big and can probably feed two diners — I did not finish it.

The Fa Da Bingsu, a Korean-style dessert, is orange-flavoured crushed ice served with a thick savoury coconut creamer, juice poppers and small taro and sweet potato balls that provide some chewy textures. I think "Fa Da" means "发达" or "prosperous" which is usually represented by orange according to Chinese tradition. The gigantic bingsu is a great treat to have on hot days.

When visiting the over 100-year-old Kian Hoon Keng Temple in Tangkak Town, don't miss Tangkak Kopitiam next to it. The dishes here are full of surprises.
