Hidden behind Fives Hotel in Bandar Johor Bahru, opposite KOMTAR JBCC Shopping Mall, there is a coconut wine shop in a gated premise. The shop sells only air nira / tuak / toddy / 椰花酒 / coconut palm wine — more accurately, from the natural fermentation of the sap from coconut trees' palm shoots.
The shop does not have a name and is just called "Kedai Tuak" or "Coconut Wine Shop", and it is dated as since 1920.
The shop is entirely self-service, cash-only and carry yourself. There are tables and chairs for drinking-in.
The coconut palm wine (toddy) is sold in glass, jug or 1.5L bottles as shown on its menu above the counter. There are actually two types of toddy: normal and special. One glass of normal toddy is RM4 whereas a glass of special toddy is RM6 — not on the menu.
For first-timer, it will be best to try both the normal and special toddy to know the differences between the two types before deciding one's own preference.
The normal toddy is mildly sweet and citrus with a faint fermentation taste. It has an immiscible appearance — doesn't mix well. The alcohol content is very low.
The "special" toddy is stronger in taste, sweeter and has a near-milky and consistent appearance. The alcohol content is also higher — probably after distillation treatment to remove some water.
The "special" toddy is definitely my preference.
Make sure you are of legal age to drink.
