Tai Hong Kopitiam is a rather big cafe — although it is named with the word "kopitiam", it is not a traditional coffee shop. The cafe is located in Taman Sentosa of Johor Bahru in one corner of a row of shophouses right opposite Plaza Sentosa.
Tai Hong Kopitiam serves many of Malaysia's local delights. From traditional toasts to lasi lemak, curry dishes, noodle and rice dishes, Hakka yong tau foo (客家酿豆腐), etc. Their signature dish is ham cha, or more commonly translated as the Hakka-style "thunder" tea rice (客家擂茶).
Tai Hong Kopitiam's Chinese name is "大丰擂茶", which means Sentosa (大丰) "thunder" tea rice (擂茶). So, it is a must to try the traditional thunder tea rice when visiting the cafe. Surprisingly, the tea is not bitter and has a pleasant taste that goes well with the bowl of rice or brown rice that is topped with minced vegetables, peanuts, fried beancurd and fried shallots. Delicious, this is really a must-try!
Tai Hong's Hakka yong tau foo (客家酿豆腐) can be ordered from the menu or self-picked from the trays near the bar counter. They are wonderful as side-dishes to accompany any dishes.
Tai Hong's Sarawak-style kolo mee (哥罗面) is also a nice dish with curly egg noodles in a white sauce made with fragrant shallot oil, lard oil, etc. The dry noodle dish is accompanied by slices of barbecue pork, meat dumplings, minced pork with mushrooms and garnished with fried shallots and chopped spring onions. It is an aromatic and tasty dish — I like this so much that I ate it twice.
Without a doubt, Tai Hong Kopitiam is another great cafe to go for different local delights on each visit.
