Hon Kee Cafe (汉记手打咖啡) is a hidden gem located at the edge of Vila de Coloane (Coloane Village / 路环村). It is housed in a wooden shack and may easily be dismissed as one of the abandoned shipyards in the area. Hon Kee Cafe is well-known for its hand-beaten, or hand-whipped, coffee (手打咖啡).

The hand-beaten coffee is created based on a customer's suggestion and served to Chow Yun Fat, when he visited the cafe, and came to be known locally as "Chow Yun Fat Coffee". The special coffee got a new name as dalgona coffee after a Korean actor tried it and claimed that it tasted like Korean candy.

Aside from hot / cold hand beaten coffees, and other beverages, there are a list of noodle dishes using instant noodle / rice vermicelli, a range of buns / toasts with various stuffings and also light snacks.

I have tried iced dalgona coffee in Johor Bahru before and thought that it is only available as iced coffee. But, Hon Kee Cafe served both hot and iced original versions.
The hot Hand Beaten Sweet Coffee (热手打咖啡), beaten 400 times, has a thick layer of frothed coffee sitting on milk and emits a nice coffee aroma. The coffee — not intended to be stirred before sipping — is thick, full-bodied and smooth in taste with subtle sweetness from the milk. This is seriously good!

The cold Hand Beaten Sweet Coffee (冻手打咖啡) is similarly crafted with hand-beaten frothed coffee sitting on iced milk. The cold coffee should be stirred before drinking with the straw. The aromatic coffee is thick and not affected by the melting ice.

The Bun with Butter (奶油包) is served freshly-toasted and still warm. The bun is soft inside with crispy crust and with a nice buttery aroma. The melted butter is probably spread on the bun before being toasted. It is a nice, simple companion to the coffee.

The Instant Noodle with Chicken Wings & Egg (鸡翼蛋公仔面) is another popular Macau dish that is served in many local cafes. The chicken wings are deep-fried till crispy and added to instant noodle soup with a sunny-side-up egg that has an orange yolk. Despite being submerged in the soup, the middle wings are still crispy and tender. It is great for breakfast too.

Hon Kee Cafe's original hot and cold hand-beaten coffee are really must-tries when visiting Coloane Village. And best to go with local delicacies.
