JB Eat: Kuching Style Restaurant (猫城茶餐室) Sarawak Delights @ Permas Jaya

Restoran Kuching Style (猫城茶餐室) is one of the many restaurants in Permas Jaya (百万镇), Masai. The restaurant specialises in popular Sarawak delicacies, especially Sarawak kolo mee (or mi kolok), Sarawak laksa and 3-layer tea as listed on its signboard. Kuching Style has several branches in the southern part of Johor and the main outlet is at Permas Jaya.

The newly-renovated Permas Jaya outlet has re-opened on 8 August 2024. It is rather spacious and cosy. Hanged on the walls are enlarged prints of their new menu.

Kuching Style has several signature dishes, including Sarawak kolo mee (砂拉越哥罗面) with white, black or red sauce, Sarawak laksa and variants with large prawns and/or steamed chicken, Kampua mee, etc. It also serves a list of fried noodles, noodle soups, traditional toasts, croissants, sandwiches, etc. For beverages, there are traditional kopi and teh, especially the three-layer tea that originates from Sarawak too.

Other than Sarawak delights, Kuching Style also has steamed chicken and roasted chicken rice (or with kolo mee). Interestingly, there is a "Mani Cai Series" of 3 noodle dishes cooked with mani cai (树仔菜) — sayur manis or "money vegetable" — and a single dish of fried mani cai with eggs. The stir-fried mani cai bee hoon is a signature dish too.

The Signature Kolo Mee (dry) is served with curly egg noodle dry-tossed in white sauce and topped with char siew (barbecue pork), minced pork, fried pork lard, fried shallot and chopped spring onions. The springy noodle with not-too-much sauce and tender meat has nice balance in flavours with different textures from the ingredients. Yummy!

The iced Green Layer Tea (绿奶茶), one of the three-layer tea series (三色奶茶), has layers of green tea syrup (bottom), evaporated milk (middle) and tea (top). It has a very nice flavour and, best of all, not too sweet.

Fried snacks are great as side dishes to accompany any meals. The fried fish stick (炸鱼条) crispy tofu skin with fish-made fillings and tastes nice.

Kuching Style Restaurant is a great place to satisfy cravings for popular Sarawak food without having to fly to Kuching or any other cities in Sarawak.
