Mid Valley Southkey Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in Johor Bahru, is located in an area known as Kota Southkey near to a river called Sungai Tebrau. Next to Southkey is Taman Sentosa and on the other side of the river is the town of Permas Jaya in Masai.

Note: Masai is also a part of the Greater Johor Bahru Metropolitan that encompasses the districts of Johor Bahru and Kulai and part of Pontian and Kota Tinggi. Based on Malaysia's postal code system, Masai (81750) is technically a district but many online articles claimed it as part of Johor Bahru District — there may be some historical reasons.

Getting to Mid Valley Southkey Mall / Permas Jaya (Masai)

myBAS T21, operated by Causeway Link, is the only public bus service that traverses between JB Sentral Bus Terminal and Permas Jaya Hub. From JB Sentral, the bus service will travel through Taman Pelangi, stop at Taman Sentosa next to Kopilicious and Pekin Restaurant (北京楼), before going to Mid Valley Southkey Mall, then crosses Sungai Tebrau to Permas Jaya. The return journey is generally the reverse of the route but with some deviations. Service interval of myBAS T21 is 25 minutes.

This post will focus on getting to Mid Valley Southkey Mall and Permas Jaya.

Get to / Return from Mid Valley Southkey Mall

Getting to Mid Valley Southkey Mall is easy, just take myBAS T21 at the bus terminal below JB Sentral. The fare is RM2 per adult.

After a brief stop at Taman Sentosa, the bus service will proceed to the bus-stop at Mid Valley Southkey Mall via a one-way road from EDL Highway. The service will go around the mall before arriving at a bus-stop on the west side of the mall. Most passengers will alight here.

To return to JB Sentral, go back to the same bus-stop for myBAS T21 — find the exit to the bus-stop in the basement level near to Village Grocer Supermarket. Be sure to board the bus service that is bounded for "JB Sentral", not "Permas Jaya", since both bus services will call at the same bus-stop. The fare is also RM2.

Get to / Return from Permas Jaya

There are generally 3 points of interests (POIs) in Permas Jaya for most Singapore residents, namely AEON Mall Permas (for shopping, supermarket, etc), the pasar malam (night market) on Sunday evenings and the numerous dining options around the area. These POIs are in a small commercial area immediately after passing Sungai Tebrau. (Refer to the map below.)

Getting to AEON Mall Permas, myBAS T21 service will stop at a bus-stop on the eastern side of the mall. To return to JB Sentral, board at the "bus-stop" (without shelter) underneath a pedestrian bridge on the western side of the mall — there is only one such bridge in the area. A PAJ signpost has been erected to identify the "invisible" bus-stop.

To visit the night market on Sunday evenings, alight at the bus-stop next to a petrol kiosk (BHPetrol Permas Jaya 2), one stop before AEON Mall Permas, and walk to Jalan Permas 11. To return to JB Sentral, board myBAS T21 at the opposite bus-stop.

To visit any of the dining options around the area, look up their locations and decide which of the two bus-stops is nearer.

The fare to this area in Permas Jaya from JB Sentral and back should be RM2.10 per adult per trip.

One more thing! There is another bus service, myBAS T22, that plies the route between Larkin Sentral and Lotus Kota Masai, passing through Permas Jaya along the way but not to Mid Valley Southkey Mall. The service will stop at the bus-stops near the petrol kiosk (BHPetrol Permas Jaya 2) and in front of AEON Mall Permas.
