Restoran Kuching Style (猫城茶餐室) is one of the many restaurants in Permas Jaya (百万镇), Masai. The kopitiam-style restaurant specialises in popular Sarawak delicacies, especially Sarawak kolo mee (or mi kolok), Sarawak laksa and 3-layer tea, as listed on its signboard, and other Malaysian delights. Kuching Style has several branches in southern Johor and the main outlet is at Permas Jaya.

The Permas Jaya outlet is renovated and re-opened in August 2024 with spacious and cosy environment. Hanged on the walls are enlarged prints of their new menu with signature dishes.

Kuching Style has a number of signature dishes, including Sarawak kolo mee (砂拉越哥罗面) with white / black / red sauce, Sarawak laksa and variants with large prawns and/or steamed chicken, Kampua mee, etc. It also serves a list of fried noodles, noodle soups, traditional toasts, croissants, etc, and steamed / roasted chicken with rice / kolo mee. For beverages, there are traditional kopi and teh, especially the three-layer teh that originated from Sarawak too.

The dry-style Signature Kolo Mee (正宗砂拉越哥罗面) is served with curly egg noodle dry-tossed in white sauce and topped with char siew (barbecue pork), minced pork, fried pork lard, and garnished with fried shallot and chopped spring onions. The springy noodle with not-too-much sauce and tender meat has nice balance in flavours with different textures from the ingredients. Yummy! The kolo mee is available in soup too.

The iced Green Layer Tea (绿奶茶), one of the three-layer tea series (三色奶茶), has layers of green tea syrup (bottom), evaporated milk (middle) and tea (top). It has a very nice flavour and, best of all, not too sweet. The green tea syrup gives the milk tea a special green tea plus black tea flavour.

Interestingly, Kuching Style has a "Mani Cai Series" with dishes cooked with mani cai (树仔菜), also known as sayur manis or "money vegetable", which is seldom seen in other restaurants.

The Signature Mani Cai Mi Hoon (招牌树菜米粉) uses rice vermicelli to stir-fry with egg, barbecue pork and de-juiced mani cai. This is a light-tasting dish with mellow flavours and without the strong taste and bitterness of the vegetable. A small saucer of red and green chillies in sweet-savoury sauce accompanies the noodle dish but it is more for adjusting the dish to taste rather than for dipping. It is a delightful dish too.

Fried snacks are great as side dishes to accompany any meals. The Fried Fish Stick (炸鱼条) with crispy tofu skin and fish-made fillings tastes nice and great as light snack.

The Salad Chicken Chop (沙拉炸鸡排) is a pretty hearty snack with tender chicken meat in non-oily, crispy batter and accompanied by mayonnaise. This meaty snack is suitable to pair with not-too-meaty dishes.

Kuching Style Restaurant is a great place to satisfy cravings for popular Sarawak food without having to fly to Kuching or any other cities in Sarawak.
