Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee (欧南园炒粿条面) is one popular stall in Hong Lim Market & Food Centre (in Chinatown), selling just fried kway teow mee and nothing else. The Michelin-accoladed stall is seldom seen without a long queue — patience will be tested just to eat their delicious char kway teow.
Outram Park (the stall)'s char kway teow is cooked with dark soy sauce, beansprouts, eggs and fresh cockles — egg and cockles may be added with extra charges. The skilfully-cooked noodle dish is not oily, not too much sauce and not too dry either. The broad noodles are thoroughly coated with bits of cooked eggs, giving a consistent taste for every mouthful. This is my favourite char kway teow.
Note that the stall's business hours is from 6am till 3pm or when sold out. So, to avoid the long peak-hour queue around lunch time and before the food are sold out, the best time to go for the delicious char kway teow will be in the morning — before 10am.
The stall is also closed on public holidays. That leaves Saturday as the only non-work day that locals will turn up at the stall and form an ultra-long queue that snaked around the food centre and taking more than an hour or two to queue for the food. Thus, weekdays are the best days to avoid long waiting time — which is why I used to "take leave to eat Outram Park fried kway teow mee".
