When visiting a small non-tourist town, there may be few options for accommodation and the few hotels often result in limited rooms and pricey room rates, especially around weekends and holidays. In most cases, homestays can offer better options. Homestays that are rented out as whole units tend to be more expensive but better suited for bigger groups. For solo or duo travellers, homestays that rented out individually rooms at inexpensive rates are better choices.

Tangkak Greenville Homestay (绿园民宿) is located in a quiet neighbourhood, called Taman Sentosa, in Tangkak Town near the northern border of Johor. The homestay is a 3-storey bungalow with big courtyard, big front porch and two small plots of garden. The establishment, managed by Mr Koo and his family, is a great option for solo / duo travellers to stay in room(s) rather than the whole unit.

The common areas inside the bungalow are very clean and well-maintained. The living room is spacious with simple decorations. There is a dining area with tables and also a kitchen that is fully equipped with refrigerator, stove, microwave, etc, for guests to cook their own food. Instant coffee, tea and sugar are also available for free. The guest rooms are on the ground floor and on level 2 with shared bathrooms. And another shared bathroom is on the third level.

The Twin Room with Private Bathroom — which I booked — is of reasonable size and has two single beds and a spacious bathroom.

From a window on the third level, guests can see the peak of Gunung Ledang, or Mount Ophir, in the near distant — Tangkak Town is the nearest gateway for hikers to scale the 1,276-metre tall mountain, the highest in Johor.

Outside the bungalow, there are pots of beautiful succulent plants, desert rose, and others, hanging on the perimeter walls. All these plants are for sales. In the two plots of garden, there are guava trees, eggplant plants, young papaya trees and flowers.
